Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is the most challenging aspect to writing? A. For me it's the editing process. I write very rapidly, and can finish the first draft of a short novel in a matter of weeks, but the editing process can take months and months. I tend to be impatient with editing, so that is the most challenging part for me.
Q. Where do you get your inspirations from? A. It really depends on the genre. For one of my sci-fi novels I was inspired by a dream. I woke up in the middle of the night and wrote down what I had just seen in my dream and that became the plot for the book. For the young readers series, I just wanted to create something whimsical and magical, so the plot and characters had to have an element of frivolity to them and I just went with it.
Q. Do you like everything you write? A. Absolutely not. In fact I have really disliked some of the earlier things I've done, so much so that I put them in a safe and will probably never look at them again. My writing continues to evolve, and I'm still trying to find a style I'm most comfortable with. However, I like to write about many things and don't want to box myself into a single genre.
Q. Do you write every day? A. Not at all. I've heard some people say that you should write something every day, but I tend to write when the mood strikes me - and when that happens I can spend an entire day doing it. My opinion is write when the passion hits you and keep going until you are comfortable taking a break. I don't like to force the ideas or they take on an unnatural feel.
